Collection Dates: Monday, October 31st to Thursday, December 1st There is no denying that the collection of items to send to soldiers overseas back in the summer was a huge success!! Over 50 packages filled with a variety of useful, fun and uplifting items were sent. The Pepperell Army Community Covenant would like to remember our local soldiers over the holidays as well. The same type of items are appropriate. Through thank you responses from the summer's packages we know that the DVDs (used or new), personal cards & messages, small games, and paper back books were really well received. Grange Halloween - Friday, October 28 Prescott Grange The Prescott Grange will host a Halloween Party on Saturday, October 28 from 5:00 - 8:00pm at the Prescott Grange Hall on Park Street, The party will feature games, a haunted walk through the woods behind the Grange Hall, and other activities, as well as snacks and beverage for purchase. The group will hike the entire Jeff Smith Trail from Jewett Street, Pepperell (Heald Pond, Gulf Brook/Pepperell Springs, Nissitissit River, Beaver Brook Assoc. trails) to the Beaver Brook Association's Wildlife Pond off Rt. 130 in Hollis, NH. The total length is almost 7+ miles. The hike starts at 9am at Jewett Street. If you plan to hike the entire trail we will need to organize shuttle service between the Beaverbrook rte 130 parking area and Jewett Street or you can hike one of the sections. There are several sections of the trail that intersect roads. The first section from Jewett st to Heald St (this is the steeper more difficult part).The second from Heald to Oak Hill. The third from Oak Hill to Lawrence. The forth Lawrence to Brookline St. The fifth from Brookline to Beaver Brook Wildlife pond(rte 130). Pepperell Living History discussion on Pepperell in the 1930s - 9:30am, Friday, Aug. 5 Pepperell Historical Commission The Pepperell Historical Commission will present a Pepperell Living History discussion on Pepperell in the 1930s at 9:30am on Friday, August 5th at the Pepperell Senior Center. The guest speaker will be Richard Parker. Mr. Parker is a life-long resident of Pepperell and a local historical resource with a wealth of information, whose family members settled in town up to 250 years ago. The hour long presentation will take place at the Senior Center starting at 9:30am and include the Great Depression leading into World War II, the hurricane of 1938, early recollections of the Lawrence Library and Town Hall, businesses of the mid-1900s, old traditions and previous ways of life in the town. 5th Annual Ayva's Ride - July 23 Pepperell Business Association The 5th Annual Motorcycle ride to raise funds for the Make a Wish Foundation. Pepperell's Independence Day parade and celebration - Saturday, July 2 Pepperell 4th of July Committee Pepperell will celebrated Independence Day on the first Saturday in July, this year July 2, with its annual best-in-the-region parade beginning at 12:30pm from Town Hall on Main St. Now that the Covered Bridge is complete and open to traffic, the parade will return to the traditional Main St. route through Railroad Square and onto Tarbell St. to the VFW. The parade will be followed by a Hometown Independence Day celebration on the field behind Varnum Brook Middle School featuring a variety of vendors, both food service and merchandise. Public Demonstration of Emergency Communications - Saturday, June 25 - Sunday, June 26 Nashoba Valley Amateur Radio Club The Nashoba Valley Amateur Radio Club will be demonstrating Amateur Radio at The Heald Street Orchard, Pepperell, MA on Saturday June 25th and 26th. The club invites the public to come meet and talk with local amateur radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about. Demonstrating a variety of radio communications capabilities, including historic Morse code, "Hams" from across the USA will be holding public demonstrations of emergency communications capabilities. This annual event, called "Field Day" is the climax of the week long "Amateur Radio Week" sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio. Local Amateur Radio operators will join with thousands of operators throughout the United States to show off their emergency capabilities on June 25th and 26th. Using primarily emergency power sources, "Ham" radio operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and backyards around the country. Their slogan, "When All Else Fails, Ham Radio Works" is more than just words to the hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis. The Pepperell Garden Club Plant Sale is one of the LARGEST plant sales in the area! Club members can help you to beautify your yard with annuals, perennials, ground covers, shrubs and trees. Locally grown vegetable plants and herbs will also be offered for sale. Mature, hardy plants dug from members' gardens are the highlight. All of the plants are reasonably priced. Some club members, who are also landscape professionals, lend their expertise to advise you on plant choices and design concepts to help you to create your garden oasis. This Plant Sale is the largest fund raising event for the garden club. Funds from the sale are used for numerous projects throughout Pepperell such as town beautification with planters on Main Street, plantings at town hall, Lawrence Library, the rotary, the rail trail, holiday greens and wreaths on public buildings, donations of trees throughout town and scholarships for local students. And, shop the Town Field, 7am-12:00noon and neighboring streets for even more great deals during the 4th Annual Town Wide Yard Sale throughout the day. Bike donations will be accepted now through the start of the sale and tax donation receipts are available. Prescription Drug Take-Back Day - Saturday, April 30 Pepperell Police Department & the Nashoba Boards of Health Pepperell Police Department will be participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) second nationwide one-day collaborative effort with state and local law enforcement agencies to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from our nation's homes. The purpose of this National Take Back Day was to provide a venue for persons who wanted to dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs . Pepperell Green Up - Saturday, April 16 - Sunday, April 24 Citizens of Pepperell, Boy Scout Troop 13, Pepperell Highway Division The 15th annual clean up of roadside litter and trash on public lands in Pepperell begins Saturday, April 16 and continues through Sunday, April 24. A map of Pepperell and a sign-up list are posted in the Lawrence Library the first week in April. Stop by to sign up and pick up some orange garbage bags. Public lands to pick up include roadsides, sidewalks, parking lots, schools, the rail trail, conservation lands, hiking trails and other areas. Anyone can participate – individuals, families, scout groups, organizations, businesses, etc, and everyone's efforts make a difference! Filled bags can be left curbside. The Pepperell Highway Department will pick up the bags along the roadside beginning Monday April 25. Thank you for participating and for Taking Pride in Pepperell. 11th Annual Farm Day - Sunday, April 17 Nashoba Conservation Trust Jon and Anne Kaiser of Twin Valley Farm, once again, invite young and old alike, to visit their farm on Brookline Street on Sunday, April 17 from 11:00am to 2:00pm. This annual event has taken place since 2001 when the Kaiser family, working with the Town of Pepperell and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, placed an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) on their property. The APR Program places a permanent deed restriction on the property that prevents any negative effect on its agricultural viability.
