Pepperell's Holiday House Tour to benefit PACH - Sunday, December 6, 1:00-4:00pm Sponsored by Century 21 Nashoba Associates Century 21 Nashoba is again hosted Pepperell's Holiday House Tour, this year on December 6 from 1:00-4:00pm, and this year all proceeds will benefit PACH Outreach (Pepperell Aid from Community to Home). Mill Site Public Forum - Wednesday, November 18, at 6:30pm at the Senior Center Mill Site Study Committee The Mill Site Study Committee needs your input again and invites Pepperell citizens to a master planning session to evaluation three possible development scenarios on November 18 at 6:30pm at the Senior Center. Using 43D grant funding, the Town has engaged development consultant, Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., to help analyze future options for the Mill Site. Working with the Mill Site Study Committee, VHB has arrived at three possible development scenarios for the site and now needs your help in determining the priorities for this highly visible parcel in downtown Pepperell. National Gaming Day at Lawrence Library - Saturday, November 14, from 10:00am - 3:00pm Lawrence Library A day of fun and games for the whole family at Lawrence Library! From 10:00am - 3:00pm the library will have the Wii set up set up with a selection of family favorites, DDR for teens & tweens, plus lots of board games to choose from. From 1:00 - 3:00pm there will be the teens and tweens Rock Band Challenge. Kids all over the country will compete against each other to see who can rock the most. At 6:30pm - "Quest for the Indie Tube" (20 minutes). These films are unrated and recommended for ages 10+. "Plants you can eat!" - Wednesday, November 11, at 7:00pm Pepperell Garden Club The Pepperell Garden Club presents “Edible Wild Plants of New England” a program by naturalist John Root of Amherst, Massachusetts. Learn how to identify native plants that can be used in your food and beverages. The public is welcome to attend this program at the Pepperell Garden Club meeting on Wednesday, November 11 at 7:00 PM at the Pepperell Senior Center located on Route 111, 37 Nashua Road. The guest fee is $5. John Root is a presenter of edible wild plant and mushroom programs at many venues throughout New England. He has studied botany at the graduate level and has taught Junior High School Science. The Pepperell Garden Club welcomes new members from surrounding towns. "Eat Like a Rainbow" Concert - Tuesday, November 10, at 2:30pm Lawrence Library Come to a hip, funky romp for kids and the folks who feed them. Hear award winning singer Jay Mankita in concert, then visit his veggie oil powered van outside (weather permitting). A great time for the whole family on this early release day from school! The concert is free, but please register. November 10 is a half day of school (parent-teacher conferences). PACH Line Dance Fundraiser - Sunday, November 1, 2:00-5:00pm - CANCELLED Pepperell Aid from Community to Home PACH Outreach will be hosting a Dance at the Community Center on Sunday, November 1, from 2:00-5:00pm featuring line dancing, couples dancing, foxtrot and waltzing with Connie Jackson, Joan Gregoire and Vince Gregoire. Trick-or-Treating on Halloween - Saturday, October 31, 6:00-8:00pm Pepperell Police Department The Pepperell Police Department will have extra patrols on the neighborhood streets between the hours of 6:00-8:00pm on Saturday, October 31 to help ensure a safe and happy halloween for trick-or-treaters and families. PHOA Equine Expo & Field Day - Pepperell Horse Owners Association The PHOA Field Day is a celebration of horses with demonstrations of various equine disciplines and an avenue of unique breeds and colors of the horse. This complimentary expo provides children with a scavenger hunt complete with prizes, pony rides and an arts and crafts center. Adults enjoy the various educational offerings along with the food and merchandise vendors. Rain Dates as needed: 10/25, 10/31, 11/1. Whether you ride a horse, own a horse, or your children just dream about cute little ponies…stop by and learn more. These beautiful animals will be on hand for all to enjoy. And, the Pepperell equine community is excited to share information about their favorite breed, training methods, and riding style with attendees. Animal Adventures - Saturday, October 24 Lawrence Library Do animals dress up for Halloween? Some already seem to be wearing costumes! Public Safety Day - Saturday, October 17 Pepperell Fire Department Pepperell Fire Department will be hosting a Public Safety Day on the Town Field on October 17th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. There will be demonstrations all day long along with giveaways and lots of informational booths. Fire, EMS, Police, Sheriffs Dept, and many others will be attending. The event is free and any proceeds from donations will go to the SAFE program which educates children on fire safety. There will be something for every age group from children to seniors. You could also save money by having your VIN etched into your car glass for free by JN Phillips Auto Glass, which will save you up to 15% on the comprehensive portion of your car insurance. The Mass General Blood-mobile will be on hand for blood donations. And there will be food, music and fun, all while bringing the community together and educating about safety. "Basic Gardening 101" with Michele Cannon - Wednesday, October 14 at 7:00pm Pepperell Garden Club The Pepperell Garden Club presents “Basic Gardening 101” a discussion by Michele Cannon of Townsend. Michele will instruct on a wide variety of topics including organic gardening, plant selection, planting techniques, composting, fertilizing, plant division and tips of all kinds. Her formal training includes University of Massachusetts Green School, Northeast Organic Farmers Association courses, Grassroots Environmental Natural Lawn Care, along with numerous workshops. Michelle owned Motherearth Landscaping where she designed, installed and maintained many private gardens. She has worked with the Conservation Commissioner of Townsend and has been recently named an “Unsung Heroine of 2009” by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women. The Committee always does a wonderful job planning Pepperell's best-in-the-region Independence Day celebration, but is in great need of new members. "Create Footprints" 5k Walk to Fight Lyme Disease Turn the Corner Foundation Create Footprints, the first annual walk to raise awareness and funding for research and education in the fight against Lyme disease will be held on Sunday, September 27, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at Florence Roche Elementary School in Groton, MA. The 5k route will take walkers along some of Groton’s most scenic country roads. Create Footprints is the first Lyme disease awareness/prevention walk ever held in Massachusetts, with all funds raised to benefit Turn the Corner Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to raising much-needed funds for the support of research, education, awareness and innovative treatments for Lyme disease. Lyme disease is the fastest growing infectious disease in America, yet it is misdiagnosed more than 50 percent of the time. Massachusetts is now listed as in the top five states with the highest rate of infection. Walkers are expected from all regions of the commonwealth and as well as other New England regions. Trails consist of wooded areas, dirt roads with minimal traffic, hills, and fields. There will be a couple of shallow river and road crossings... Unfortunately, finding a compatible donor is far more difficult than matching only a blood type and typically requires a broad search. On Saturday, August 15, from 9-1 at the Pepperell Senior Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute will see if you are a match for Den or someone like him. If you are interested in becoming a donor, the initial process is quite simple. You must be between the ages of 18-60, complete a short medical questionnaire, and give a cheek swab sample. Further information is available should you be found to be a compatible donor. For more information, please contact Sharon at the Senior Center Summer Playground runs through August 7 Pepperell Recreation Pepperell Recreation will again host its annual Summer Playground program for Pepperell children, from 9:00am - 12:00 noon, beginning on Monday, July 6 at the Pepperell Town Field and Community Center. In order to keep the cost down, the program has been shortened by one week, but still provides one of the most affordable summer activity programs for Pepperell families. The cost will be $125 per attendee for the five-week period (family maximum $250). Jul 24 Lawrence Library Art Gallery A solo recital will be presented by clarinetist Alice Bradley Gallagher at 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 24, in the Art Gallery. Gallagher, a native of Townsend, made her solo debut at the age of eighteen with the Boston Pops. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School. The recital features music for solo clarinet, including a cello suite by J.S. Bach and Pagannini’s Perpetual Motion, both arranged for clarinet by Delécluse, as well as a modern piece by Krystof Penderecki, and a sonata for solo clarinet by David Salvage that was premiered by Gallagher in New York in 2004. Admission is free, and a reception will follow the performance. Registration online at www.lawrencelibrary.org is encouraged. 4th of July in Pepperell Pepperell 4th of July Committee The first Saturday in July this year is the 4th and Pepperell will again host a full day of celebrations. The parade will begin at 12:30 and will follow the same route as last year, beginning at Town Hall and ending on the Town Field (the parade will not go past the rotary down Main St due to the covered bridge closure, we except to go back to our traditional parade route next year once the new covered bridge has opened). For full parade information, visit www.pepperell4thofjuly.org/celebration.htm The parade will be followed by "Ribfest 2009" on the Town Field, including a barbeque, music on the bandstand, a crafts fair, and fun for children on the Town Field immediately following the parade. The 4th of July Committee is still hoping to hold the annual fireworks extravaganza in the evening, although donations are still needed in order to pull it off. This year, due to the budget shortage, the Town will not be able to contribute to the fireworks celebration as has been the case in the past. That means the 4th of July Committee must raise the roughly $12,000 completely from donations. Mr. Root’s program will feature our most common and appealing plants with samples available for participants to examine and taste. You will recognize many of these plants in your own yard!
The Pepperell Garden Club invites the public to their September meeting, Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 7:00 PM at the Pepperell Senior Center. The meeting will include a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new potting shed that has been built by the Nashoba Valley Technical High School students. The new potting shed will be a valuable addition for the garden club and Pepperell seniors.
The meeting will also feature a talk by Donna Castle on “Myths & Facts of Lyme Disease.” Donna, a Lyme Disease advocate and parent of a daughter with Lyme Disease, has recently been interviewed on the “Greater Boston TV Show.” This talk is especially timely as the ticks will be active again this fall.
