PHOA Equine Expo & Field Day - Pepperell Horse Owners Association The PHOA Field Day is a celebration of horses with demonstrations of various equine disciplines and an avenue of unique breeds and colors of the horse. This complimentary expo provides children with a scavenger hunt complete with prizes, pony rides and an arts and crafts center. Public Safety Day - Saturday, October 17 Pepperell Fire Department Pepperell Fire Department will be hosting a Public Safety Day on the Town Field on October 17th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. There will be demonstrations all day long along with giveaways and lots of informational booths. Fire, EMS, Police, Sheriffs Dept, and many others will be attending. The event is free and any proceeds from donations will go to the SAFE program which educates children on fire safety. There will be something for every age group from children to seniors. "Create Footprints" 5k Walk to Fight Lyme Disease Turn the Corner Foundation Create Footprints, the first annual walk to raise awareness and funding for research and education in the fight against Lyme disease will be held on Sunday, September 27, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at Florence Roche Elementary School in Groton, MA. The 5k route will take walkers along some of Groton’s most scenic country roads. Create Footprints is the first Lyme disease awareness/prevention walk ever held in Massachusetts, with all funds raised to benefit Turn the Corner Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to raising much-needed funds for the support of research, education, awareness and innovative treatments for Lyme disease. Lyme disease is the fastest growing infectious disease in America, yet it is misdiagnosed more than 50 percent of the time. Massachusetts is now listed as in the top five states with the highest rate of infection. Walkers are expected from all regions of the commonwealth and as well as other New England regions. Unfortunately, finding a compatible donor is far more difficult than matching only a blood type and typically requires a broad search. On Saturday, August 15, from 9-1 at the Pepperell Senior Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute will see if you are a match for Den or someone like him. If you are interested in becoming a donor, the initial process is quite simple. You must be between the ages of 18-60, complete a short medical questionnaire, and give a cheek swab sample. For more information, please contact Sharon at the Senior Center Summer Playground runs through August 7 Pepperell Recreation Pepperell Recreation will again host its annual Summer Playground program for Pepperell children, from 9:00am - 12:00 noon, beginning on Monday, July 6 at the Pepperell Town Field and Community Center. In order to keep the cost down, the program has been shortened by one week, but still provides one of the most affordable summer activity programs for Pepperell families. The cost will be $125 per attendee for the five-week period (family maximum $250). Jul 24 Lawrence Library Art Gallery A solo recital will be presented by clarinetist Alice Bradley Gallagher at 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 24, in the Art Gallery. Gallagher, a native of Townsend, made her solo debut at the age of eighteen with the Boston Pops. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School. The recital features music for solo clarinet, including a cello suite by J.S. Bach and Pagannini’s Perpetual Motion, both arranged for clarinet by Delécluse, as well as a modern piece by Krystof Penderecki, and a sonata for solo clarinet by David Salvage that was premiered by Gallagher in New York in 2004. Admission is free, and a reception will follow the performance. Registration online at www.lawrencelibrary.org is encouraged. 4th of July in Pepperell Pepperell 4th of July Committee The first Saturday in July this year is the 4th and Pepperell will again host a full day of celebrations. The parade will begin at 12:30 and will follow the same route as last year, beginning at Town Hall and ending on the Town Field (the parade will not go past the rotary down Main St due to the covered bridge closure, we except to go back to our traditional parade route next year once the new covered bridge has opened). The 4th of July Committee is still hoping to hold the annual fireworks extravaganza in the evening, although donations are still needed in order to pull it off. This year, due to the budget shortage, the Town will not be able to contribute to the fireworks celebration as has been the case in the past. That means the 4th of July Committee must raise the roughly $12,000 completely from donations.
